Commissioning a wedding portrait or illustrated invitation

A one-off piece you'll keep for life. How to brief an illustrator, what photos to send, and how to plan around your wedding date.

Start earlier than you think

Invitations usually go out weeks before the day, and they need printing after the art is done. Count back: printing and posting, then the illustrator's days, then time for sketch rounds. A portrait as a gift for the day itself needs the same planning.

What to send

  • Clear photos of each of you in good light, plus any pets who should be in it.
  • The setting — your venue, a place that matters to you, or a plain background.
  • Two or three styles you love from the illustrator's own portfolio.
  • For invitations: the wording, the printed size, and whether you need matching pieces (save-the-date, menu, place cards).

Agree before you pay

  • How many sketch rounds are included — likenesses often need one round of small changes.
  • The files you get: a print-ready file at your size, and a smaller one for sharing.
  • Whether you can print it as many times as you like (usually yes for personal use).

Paying safely

You pay the quoted price when you choose your illustrator. We hold it, you see the sketch on your project page, and the illustrator is paid when you approve the final.
